From sketch to 3D model: how it works and how much it costs
Do you have a sketch, drawing or photo and want a print-ready 3D model from it? In this article we explain how the conversion from sketch to 3D model works, what the STL and OBJ formats are, what such models are used for and how much production costs.
What are STL and OBJ?
When we talk about a 3D model for printing, we most often mean a file in STL or OBJ format. STL is the universal standard for 3D printing — it describes the shape of an object with a mesh of triangles and is understood by practically every 3D printer and slicing program (slicer). OBJ, in addition to the geometry, can also store colors and textures (a UV map), which is why it is suitable for rendering and further processing in programs such as Blender, ZBrush or Maya.
For most users who want to print a model, an STL file is enough. If you need textures or a color render, we also prepare an OBJ.
How does modeling from a sketch work?
The process of converting from sketch to 3D model at 3DShop.si happens in three steps:
- You send a template — a sketch, drawing, photo or just a text description of the idea. More angles and details mean a more accurate result.
- Modeling — using AI tools we create the base geometry, then we refine it manually: we clean up artifacts, fill in missing details and optimize the topology for 3D printing.
- Preview and delivery — we send you a preview (a render), and once you confirm it, you receive the final STL/OBJ file by email.
What is a custom 3D model used for?
Converting a sketch into a 3D model is useful in many cases:
- 3D printing at home or at school — you print the model on your own FDM or resin printer.
- Figurines and miniatures — for tabletop games (D&D, Warhammer), collectible characters or gifts.
- Prototypes and products — a quick conversion of an idea into a physical prototype before more expensive CAD development.
- Marketing and visualization — presentation models, product renders, set design.
- Memorial and grave statues — if you want a model of a person or motif that we then also print and paint.
How much does it cost to create a 3D model from a sketch?
The price depends on the complexity and the desired result. At 3DShop.si you can choose from three packages:
- Basic STL (from €15) — an AI-generated model with basic cleanup, STL file only, delivery in 24–48 hours.
- Optimized STL/OBJ (€29) — manual cleanup, topology optimization for printing, STL + OBJ with a UV map.
- STL + 3D printing (from €39) — we create the model and also print it (and paint it on request).
For an exact price, send us your sketch or description to info@3dshop.si. The full price list is available on the AI 3D model price list page.
How do I order?
Ordering is simple: you send a template via the contact form or email, we prepare a preview, you confirm it and you receive the file. If you do not have your own printer, we can also print and paint the model for you. Read more about the service on the custom sketch-to-3D-model page.
