Mary statue 50 cm — how we made a large-format memorial figure

For this project we made a custom 50 cm Mary memorial statue — much larger than our standard catalogue figurine (~15 cm, €39). The statue is designed for placement at a grave or in a chapel, printed in PETG, outdoor-ready, with a hand-applied bronze finish and protective lacquer.

Why 50 cm instead of the standard 15 cm

In our memorial statues range, the standard Mary figurine is about 15 cm tall and suited to smaller headstones or indoor placement. The client wanted a more prominent statue that would stand at the grave as a standalone memorial — so we went to 50 cm, nearly three times the height and roughly ten times the material volume.

At this scale the statue becomes an architectural element: it is visible from a distance, fills the space beside a larger headstone appropriately, and conveys a sense of dignity that a small figurine cannot achieve. At the same time it requires a completely different approach to 3D printing, assembly and stability — which is why it falls under large-format 3D printing.

The making process

1. 3D modelling

The starting point was an existing 3D model of Mary in prayer with a crown. We adapted the model for large-format printing: wall thickness, internal reinforcement and split points so our print bed could handle each part without losing detail on the face and hands.

2. Printing in parts

We printed the statue in PETG filament in several segments — body, head, crown and base. Each part was printed with high infill for strength, then hand-finished and prepared for assembly.

3. Assembly and filling

The parts were bonded with high-quality epoxy adhesive, seams filled, sanded and smoothed. Internal reinforcement and a solid base ensure the statue holds its shape despite the greater weight and height.

4. Painting — bronze finish

After a base coat we applied several layers of paint in a bronze tone by hand — base, mid layer with a metallic effect and patina in deeper reliefs. The goal was the look of a traditional bronze memorial statue, not a plastic figurine.

5. UV lacquer and outdoor protection

Final step: multi-layer UV-resistant and weatherproof lacquer that protects the paint from sun, rain, frost and moisture. Without this protection the bronze effect would fade over time and the surface would become vulnerable outdoors.

Technical challenges of large format

A 50 cm statue brings challenges that we do not encounter with a 15 cm catalogue piece:

Outdoor durability

A memorial statue at a grave is exposed to all weather — sun, rain, snow, temperature swings. That is why we use PETG (more resistant to heat and moisture than PLA) and a final multi-layer UV lacquer. With occasional maintenance (wiping dust, checking the lacquer) the statue keeps its appearance for years. When ordering we always advise on placement — a shaded spot under a tree or canopy extends its lifespan.

Material and conclusion

For this project we chose PETG — a strong, slightly flexible material that handles outdoor conditions better than classic PLA. The bronze paint and protective lacquer give the finished statue the look of a traditional memorial monument, while keeping the advantages of 3D printing: flexible sizing, faster production and lower cost compared to cast bronze.

The result is a 50 cm tall Mary memorial statue, suitable for placement at a grave or in a chapel — with a strong presence, carefully finished details and an outdoor-ready finish.

Order your memorial statue

If you need a memorial statue in standard size (~15 cm) or a custom large format, see our memorial statues range. For large formats (40 cm and above) we have a dedicated page on large-format 3D printing. Send us a photo of the grave, desired size and a brief description — we will prepare a quote and placement suggestion.
